Deirdre took up office as Diocesan President in January 2019. As President she is the public face of Birmingham Mothers’ Union both within the Birmingham Diocese and elsewhere.
Birmingham Mothers’ Union has always been part of my life as my mother was a keen member. My active membership of MU started 16 years ago when I returned to Birmingham after 20 years away. I was encouraged to become a MU parenting facilitator and this showed me what MU was really about. St Alphege in Solihull is my church and I have served as Parish Warden, Lay Chair for Solihull Deanery. I am also a member of Bishop’s Council. I became fully involved in Birmingham MU when I took on the role of looking after the Diocesan members and a Trustee. Working alongside Jackie the previous Diocesan President followed. This involved engaging with branches in the Diocese and attending conferences arranged by the worldwide Mothers’ Union for members from Britain and Ireland. Now I find myself Diocesan President!
On February 26th 2019 the Archbishop of Canterbury commissioned Sheran Harper as the Worldwide President in Southwark Cathedral and several of us from Birmingham Mothers’ Union were able to be there. Archbishop Justin in his sermon made plain his high regard for the work of MU across the world, working in diverse places and supporting the needs of our local communities. You can read all about this event and the Archbishops’ message to MU here.
As well as Deirdre there is a Board of Trustees which shares the oversight of Birmingham Mothers’ Union.
