More mature readers might like to try this cheap version of step aerobics:

1. March briskly up the stairs to collect something you left behind when you came down first thing.
2. March back up the stairs to return the item you brought down - which isn't the one you went up for because by the time you got up there you had forgotten what that was - and this time take downstairs the item you went up for in the first place, assuming you can still remember what that was.
Repeat 1. and 2. at least twenty times before bedtime and you will find that you are in a better shape than you would have been if your memory had remained as good as it used to be.
N.B. This doesn't work too well if you live in a bungalow.

How true. If only we could incorporate little bit of the "call to prayer" approach in our lives, each day would be better for it. I agree there are places where you can feel the Holy Spirit's presence so strongly that it's easier to connect. A group of us are going to Burrswood a week on Tuesday for a "Quiet Day"!

Thanks for the link to this blog, Heather. I've just had a read and it's great. I really identify with what the writer says about having to restrain yourself from yelling at the kids, especially when you're under pressure. When one of ours does something silly I also aspire to react calmly, hopefully teaching them a little about managing irritation. I also try to view childish behaviour (spilling things, time-wasting etc.) as inevitable and quite distinct from deliberate naughtiness. Nicky and Sila Lee talk very helpfully about this perspective in their parenting book - it certainly helps me to hold back on the reprimanding until it's warranted!

Hi Julie. I'm reassured that you've found this too. For a while I felt guilty about not offering hot food every day but when I analysed it I found the children actually consume far more fruit and veg when they eat buffet-style. When the twins are a little older I'll experiment with 'proper' meals again.

Great article Elise, I have long been a fan of the buffet option where children are concerned. Alice had a friend round for tea last week and only scored my efrorts at 29/30 as it wasn't as good as her last visit - why I asked - last time there was a buffet!
