Reflection

Father David writes:

St John describes the utter transformation of the Disciples after the Resurrection  in terms that St Luke divides into two wonderful earth shattering events.
The Disciples were hidden away behind locked doors when the Risen Jesus stands in their midst and offers both His Peace and evidence that he is alive and then he goes on to breathe His Spirit onto and into them. They are transformed and filled with boldness and joy can share the Good News of Easter to the public beyond their safety zone. For St Luke these events are separated by 50 days and so we celebrate at Pentecost the Gift of the Spirit.
There is no doubt that the Easter event changes the lives of the Disciples. Now forgiven and restored (they had all run away and Peter had denied Jesus) they become new people. So can we become new if we allow the Risen Christ to empower us with his Breath of Life and are prepared to witness to the Risen Christ whose death and resurrection have so changed the world. The 50 days of Easter are for feasting after the 40 days of Lent and for offering ourselves as messengers of the Good News which the world so needs.
May the Risen Christ walk with you and help you as you read the Scriptures and nourish you as you meet him in the broken bread of Communion.

“The spiritual dimension within each one of us is called something beyond ourselves. It is a hunger of the heart; a longing for something more, a relationship which will complete us and fulfil our unspoken need. True religion is not the imposition of sets of rules; it is the discovery of a relationship which helps us make sense of life and leads us to the fullness of life.” Fleur Dorrell – Head of Faith & Policy at the Mothers’ Union
