MALTESE ISLANDS

Corporate Communion is held at the Seminary on Gozo at 11 a.m. on the first Wednesday each month.

Meetings are generally held on the third Monday each month.

Starting with coffee between 10.00 – 10.30 am followed by the Speaker, and Prayer Time, finishing at 12 noon

Our members live on both of islands where they take an active part in the full life of the three local congregations. Traveling to meetings on the opposite island involves a sea crossing which can be difficult in inclement weather. However meetings are usually well attended and are also supported by regular visiting members from the UK. The fund raising family-based projects are well supported by all members who continually look for new ideas and recipients within the islands and worldwide.

As a Branch we have always believed our strength is our loyalty to each other, no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in, our total commitment to uphold Mothers Union aims and objectives and to do everything for and in His name.

The Leader and Secretary stood down from office at the AGM in December due to family circumstances and they have returned to UK. Four new members were enrolled at the AGM and the current membership are evaluating how the branch will move forward into 2013.

Branch members are presented with a CD by members of Steynton MU in the Diocese of St Davids, Wales visiting Gozo with the Neyland Ladies Choir from Pembrokeshire on a wet Tuesday of Easter Week !

  • HISTORY

There is some evidence to suggest that a Mothers’ Union branch existed on Malta at the turn of the last century; The Reverend Alfred Malim M.A., came to Malta and took control in November 1894 as Senior Chaplain to the Forces, and in his speech of thanks when leaving six years later he referred to those who had helped with the Mothers’ Union.
There is also a mention in 1937 that the life of St Paul's Pro-Cathedral was strengthened by its connections with the Mothers' Union, so there appears to have been a branch up until the start of WWII.

The current branch with members from both islands and all three Anglican congregations came into being in 1997.
