Hi Linda,

The Review into the commercialisation and sexualisation of childhood that Reg Bailey is leading on behalf of the Department for Education is due for publication at the end of this month (May). Reg Bailey will make recommendations to the Government on how to address these issues. The articles in the press earlier this week quote a source close to the inquiry speculating on what the Review might recommend, but we will not know what Mr Bailey is recommending until the Review is published. The Bye Buy Childhood Campaign has already sent in a petition with over 18,500 signatures to Downing Street calling on the Government to tackle the commercialisation and sexualisation of childhood.

I read about Reg Baily trying to ban ‘indecent’ images on t.v. before 9pm. I totaly agree. Is there a petition or something that we can sign to support this? Mrs Linda Smith

Good piece on bbc news website today – 11.04.11. It would be nice to see more retailers offer great ranges of funky clothes for ages 10-16 that aren’t overtly sexual. One major clothes retailer has a range specifically for 8-16 yr old girls which is full of clothes that are trendy without being provocative or overly adult in design. Retailers like these should be highlighted and applauded – getting fewer inappropriate items on sale is great, but let’s also encourage those retailers who offer an alternative acceptable to young people.

The MU is absolutely right to oppose the sexualisation of children by commercial organisations; more power to you! But please do not, at the same time, forget the other major source of sexualisation of children (perhaps bigger): the Government, through the Department of Education, and the whole “sexual education” programme. This aims to teach children – very young children – that all kinds of sex (anal, oral, etc.) are good things that they should indulge in. Behind this are people who are either very misguided or very wicked. Commercialism affects many children; education, schools, touches them all.

A very good campaign, long overdue! As a grandmother to teenage girls I see the results of this commercialistation all the time. I have just submitted extracts from the report into the commercialisation of childhood for our parish magazine. We need to get the word over to as many people as possible. A Mothers’ Union member and branch leader.

Thank you for your message. You can still get involved with the campaign – the petition is only one small part of it. If you can get any signatures over the next few days, however, please do still send us in a petition.

Writing to your MP would be great and I love your ‘send this link to a friend’ idea – we’ll see what we can do.

We deliberately didn’t provide a ‘standard letter’ as MPs tell us this is one of the least effective methods to get their attention – they like to read about people’s personal concerns in their own words. But please do use the guidance in the ‘Campaign Briefing’ in the ‘Get Involved’ section under ‘Resources’ to give you some ideas.

I think this is a great campaign but still more could be done to raise awareness. I only found out because my mum is a MU member – and unfortunately sent me the flyer after the 10 Jan deadline. I’m sure lots of my friends would support this – but there’s no clear guidance about how to petition after 10 Jan deadline. What do we do?
Also – it would be great to have a standard form of letter to go to the mp which we could cut and paste – then it would only be 5 mins to send to the mp – and if there was a send this link to friends bit then we could alert so many more people.
We really need to get more non-MU members on board don’t we – and I’m sure we could!

Dear Stella,

Thank you for your comment. We produced these cards specifically for the Greenbelt festival, where the games were organised and played largely by children accompanied by their parents. We won’t be adding any more games but will add a note on the webpage highlighting safety.
